- Drink plenty of fluids, especially water
Plenty of fluids intake can speed up the process of dissolving stones. Drink 12 glasses of water instead of the lower intake limit. Check the colour of urine, if it is pale yellow or yellowish you are probably dehydrated. Dehydration increases the probability and size of stones. Never stay dehydrated. Say no to sugary drinks or cold drinks. - Avoid foods that are rich in oxalate
Foods that are rich in oxalates promote the stone formation and furthermore development of the stone. Food items like chocolates, coffee, sweet potatoes, spinach, beans, soy products, peanuts, sweet bran are considered to be the sources of oxalate. When you have stones or are at the risk of developing stones, you should avoid such food products.
- Include enough dietary calcium
Calcium should not be reduced from the diet, due to the occurrence of stones. As low calcium diets risk more stone formation as well as weak bones. However, calcium supplements are known to increase the risk or stone development. - Avoid high salt intake
Food items like canned soups and vegetables, chips, meat are rich in sodium salt content. Also, foods that are processed with sodium nitrate and sodium carbonate are the ones which contain sodium salt. Such foods should be avoided. Salt intake should always be monitored. It is known that sodium is responsible to leach out the calcium from the blood, which will accumulate the calcium in kidneys and urinary bladder, making healthy bone vulnerable to weaken and break too. - High protein diets should be avoided and limit the animal proteins in the diet
Foods that are rich in animal protein content are usually acidic in nature. The acidic nature of such food products comes from uric acid, which eventually is one of the stone components. It is advised to check the quantity of animal protein intake as well as protein-rich diets. - High doses of Vitamin C supplements should not be consumed.
When Vitamin C is consumed in excess quantity, Vitamin C becomes one contributing factors of stone formation. It is advised not to consume Vitamin C more than 90 mg.
